Twenty-six ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs competed in the Ohio National Association of Teachers of Singing, or NATS, a singing competition where they competed against 177 ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs from other Ohio universities.
NATS is a premier organization for voice teachers and coaches from all over the world, with around 10,000 members. Each state has its own NATS chapter that hosts a competition once a year to bring ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs and voice coaches together.
As the largest group to ever represent the university, Miami’s ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs collectively played almost 100 pieces. Starting in late August, these ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs worked tenaciously, collaborating with faculty to choose three to five pieces each that followed the specific guidelines of the categories they were competing in. In the six weeks leading up to the competition, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs learn to understand and perfect the inflection of different foreign languages they will be signing.
“As an educator I love seeing the way the ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs are able to observe each other signing and the way each of them support and encourage one another. It makes me proud to see the support as we are stronger together as a group” voice professor Alison Acord said.
The competition provides a positive environment for ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs and voice coaches to provide feedback to one another. Voice coaches have the opportunity to judge ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs and give written feedback to help them expand their singing abilities.
The following ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs were honored:
